Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Why should my player play for Southwest Christian Juniors?
  • Play with friends and families you already know
  • Carpool convenience to practice and tournaments
  • Convenient practice locations at Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, and Holy Family in Victoria, which saves time and money
  • No expense added to travel to out-of-state tournaments, only to play the same teams that compete in local tournaments
  • Work on team and individual skills
  • Play with future/current Southwest Christian players
  • Reasonable length of season to avoid player burnout (as opposed to possibly playing through the first week of July with other clubs)
  • The quality of coaching is just as good or better than other clubs that you may pay up to six times the cost

Question: My volleyball player also plays another sport. Is it possible for her to do both?
Absolutely! First of all, SWC Juniors understands that players and families have other things going on besides volleyball. School sponsored athletic teams are a big priority to many families, and that’s okay. The additional responsibility can teach players the value of time management. Playing other sports is also a great way to build athleticism, which always improves skills on the volleyball court. However, in the club's experience, players that also participate in dance and hockey have not traditionally been able to successfully maintain both commitments. We ask that all families seriously assess their player's availability when considering that practice nights can vary from week to week.

Question: What is your policy on playing time?
SWC Juniors always tries to have players playing with other players at the appropriate skill level  We also try to limit the number of players on our teams to ensure that everyone has an active role on the court. Limiting rosters to 9-10 players allows for the opportunity to maximize touches on the ball in practice as well as considerable amounts of game time for all of the players involved. It is important to note, however, that not every player on a team will receive exactly the same playing time. Our staff strives to put players in a position to be successful, and develop each player appropriately according to her abilities. Players with more skill are likely to receive more playing time, as they aid in the development of the players around them.

Question: What do I need to do to prepare my player for tryouts?
Here are the steps you need to take prior to tryouts:
1.      Register online using the REGISTRATION link above (under the Club Season tab)

2.      Look through the TRYOUTS page (under the Club Season tab) to become familiar with both the fee structure and tryout process
3.      Make sure your player has the proper equipment – kneepads, athletic shoes, etc.

Question: My player doesn’t currently attend Southwest Christian and may not in the future. Can she still play?
While we’d love to have everyone on our teams play at Southwest in the future, circumstances don’t always allow for that to happen. For years now, players from other schools have been part of our teams to ensure that all of our players are having a good experience by playing the appropriate position and skill level. We certainly don’t expect that everyone that comes through our program will end up at the high school, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing!

Question: Will my player be placed on one of your teams or are there cuts?
In recent years, the SW Christian volleyball program has increased in popularity. Because of that, we may have more players at tryouts than we will have available roster spots. However, in situations where this isn't the case, we are open to helping families to find another program in the area that may be a good match for their player.

Question: What is the tournament schedule?
Traditionally, we don't decide our tournament schedule for the year until after tryouts. Since we are focused primarily on player development rather than expensive travel tournaments and filling our trophy case, we wait to see the competitive level of our team prior to deciding on a schedule. We enter our teams in tournaments that are an appropriate competitive fit, as that is the best way for players and teams to improve. Our hope as a club is that we want our teams to be challenged, but to experience success, as well. As a result, our teams frequently end up with similar numbers of wins and losses at the end of the season.

Question: When do your teams practice?
While it is ideal to have teams practice on consistent days and times, the logjam of winter gym space makes that difficult. Our 12-and-under teams consistently practice on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-3:30pm, plus two other weeknights per month. Our other teams practice twice a week. Our typical practice times are Sundays from 3:30-5:30 or 5:30-7:30pm, as well as Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7:00-9:30pm. Since high school basketball teams have priority on gym space, we are only able to practice on nights that don't conflict with home basketball games.
